hello all , I live in Rep of Ireland and as domestic wind turbines are only new to the market here and also very expensive , I decided to look up the web and found G.P.T. the best site to aquire the information i need to build my own turbine , as i done tests on my wind speed Agv. 9.4 mph but i also have a lot of wind turblance from tree's and buildings so i was concidering building a 3 kw. vertical turbine from scratch , as the vertical i am told is better at handling turblance . I am in the process of purching a 3Kw PMA.at the moment and was looking for information on the Blade size ,type ,designe, or any other information on a vertical turbine. Thank Thomas Fortune

Hi Thomas,

Welcome to Green Power Talk!
As you may have read in another thread I've been searching high and low for a PM alternator. So far with very little (affordable) result. Would you mind publishing where you are getting that 3kW alternator from? Thanks!

As your VAWT project progresses, please open a new thread in the wind or DIY section and let us know more about it. I'm sure many here are interested.

Hi rob, you were looking for PMA's.
Well the ones that i am thinking of buying are 500 watt Pma's which are stackable so you can build them up to 3 kw , they have a 22 mm center and weighe 1.5 kg they are made by (YASKAWA ELECTRIC OF JAPAN) but i am buying them from a supplier in england , he has not given me a price of them yet.

Greetings Thomas,

I am familiar with Yaskawa product. I have used their servo and variable frequency drive products. I didn't know they made PMA's. A quick search of their web site doesn't show a hit under PMA, but their search function doesn't appear very intuitive. Is it a PM servo motor you are planning to integrate as alternator? A catalog or model number will help to determine design characteristics.

Have you settled on your VAWT concept? Savonius or H-rotor type?

Your wind resource at 9.4MPH is similar to mine at my cottage. Not very good. :( 3kW harvested from a 12MPH wind requires a swept area of over 700 square feet. Large...

Regards,
Mark
