Greetings Paul,
Not sure of your friend's requirements.
Here is one with a commercial budget in mind.

Perhaps post some details such as kW and voltage requirements, standby or continuous duty.
Regards,

My friend Ron Sayers built his own natural gas powered generator system that was used to power part of his house thru a battery bank and inverter system.
He started with a 4 cylinder Hyundai motor and cleaned it up. He mounted this on a homebuilt steel frame. He then attached an oil cooled 400 watt alternator from a city school bus. The natural gas part was really interesting. He attached a natural gas line to the throttle body injector and used the normal Hyundai engine controls to control the gas flow. I was surprised at how well it worked. I would have thought that the engine would have made more noise than it did but it was very quiet. I have a few digital photos kicking around somewhere. It was running right next to his washer and dryer in his basement. He had the exhaust system running out the basement window. The engine was being cooled with a garden hose at the time that I saw it running.
