I have no experience at all with wind power but I am interested in setting something up where I would have a small turbine charging a 12 v battery and running some LED lighting off of it. As I said, I have no experience so if anyone could recommend a kit or simple set up that I could buy and mess around with to get the basics and maybe go from there.

I don't know what power you have, and I suggest that the wind generator would work well
together with solar panels, maybe this net page can help you: [Admin: gratuitous add link removed]

Rob, I don't know where you're located. What's available in small wind turbines will vary depending on location.

About the smallest (real) wind turbines over here would be something like a Primus Air 30. Those have a peak output of about 200 Watt. Even that little power doesn't come cheap; over here one goes for around CAD$1,200, and that is without a tower.

I'm sure there are cheaper (Chinese) turbines around, though keep in mind you get what you pay for. If this is just meant as a glorified science experiment that could be fine, just don't expect too much from small/cheap turbines on a short tower.
