Hello everyone, my name is Emanuel Mendiola and I am an undergraduate student at Stanford University. I am currently working on a wind energy research project for the Bill Lane Center for the American West at Stanford.

At Stanford University, researchers are developing a vertical-axis wind turbine that is shaped like a vertical egg beater. This new wind turbine design is optimized to ensure the turbines always face the wind, replicating the "whole-is-greater-than-the-parts" effect where the wind turbines arranged in a closely spaced array can create wind flow synergies that can generate more power per unit land area than traditional horizontal-axis wind turbines. Compared to traditional wind turbines, this new design is much smaller and has the potential to be less of a danger to avian species.

While this new design is still in research development, it has great potential. For our research project, we are seeking to study attitudes toward the use of wind turbines and wind energy and study what people's opinions are for the new wind turbine design. We are interested to learn what people who are engaged in environmental issues and people that either actively support or are against wind turbines think about wind energy and this new wind turbine design. At the moment, our research project is focused on people living in California.
