I'd like to build a small wind generator to power LED light strips on a deck. I would like the generator (stepper motor?) to charge a small battery to run the lights at night when there is no wind. How can i do this? Do I need a charge controller for the battery? There must be a simple guide that I haven't found. Could someone point me in the right direction please.

Hi Dale,
It depends on the area you are living (I mean where you want to set up this wind turbine). If there is no high-speed wind then you can go without it. To avoid overspeeding and preventing your small battery against over voltage, you should set up this. I found an article that will give you more guidance. please click here (http://www.reuk.co.uk/wordpress/wind/wind-turbine-charge-controller/)
