Hello,
I joined this forum because it looks like a great resource to come to for advise and ideas for a project that our nonprofit organization is spearheading. For now, I want to introduce the organization and invite anyone who is interested to participate in the global collaborative projects that we are spearheading.
I formed KoKa Media, an Oregon-based 501(c)3 (http://kokamedia.weebly.com/)earlier this year because I want to be more involved in my kids' education and because I enjoy learning and making. At KoKa Media, our mission is to inspire lifelong STEM learning for all through interactive technologies and immersive media.
____Project: Z-NEV____
Currently, we're spearheading a global project to turn an 85-foot, 91-year old wooden yacht named Denali into Z-NEV; a zero-net energy vessel (http://kokamedia.weebly.com/znev.html)using open source technologies and interactive collaboration tools.
With every project we develop, our focus is on the process and the journey rather than the final outcome. The idea is to learn about learning. With Z-NEV, we want to re-power an almost-century-old wooden vessel with electric vehicle engines that we adapt from the available open-source resources and we want to power those engines with open-source renewable-energy technologies. And this is just the beginning. Z-NEV will have robotics, automation, autonomous vehicles, a maker space, research stations and an entire interconnected network of onboard systems controlled by one application.
We also want to form partnerships that strengthen our mission and make learning fun for all. We recently teamed up with the engineering and robotics toy brand, Meccano to develop a program for student robotics teams around the world. Students with experience or no experience in robotics or engineering will go through the process of building and coding a Meccano robot, then modifying that robot, and finally designing a robotic or mechatronic system and building a model that will one day be replicated on board Z-NEV. Students will collaborate with other teams of students around the world and interact through virtual reality technology and other immersive and interactive tools.
KoKa Media and Project Z-NEV are in their infancy - beta-phase, but we are growing. In addition to the partnerships mentioned above, we're looking for new board members and advisory council members to offer guidance in their respective areas of expertise. There are no age or location requirements as long as participants have an internet connection and an interest in promoting lifelong STEM learning.
Feel free to connect if you're interested in exploring opportunities. I'll be posting to the community with a lot of questions as Z-NEV progresses.
Thanks,
Rick Coyle
