View Full Version : Power-one solar inverter for wind

Hello Wind friends

As you maybe know is the production from wind inverters stopped from the brand Power-One.
This is a , or can be a major problem when your plant is equiped with this inverter and you loose it by defect.

Most wind inverters are the Aurora 6000 or the Aurora 3.6

The same inverters are still on the marked called PVI 3.6 or the PVI 6000
Lets say that becoming one of these would be mutch more easy because there are thousands manufactured.

But this inverter has a mppt made for solar and you cannot program a curve for a windturbine.

I found that this is partial true,
The PVI Aurora is the same hardware as what the wind version is,
Yes it has a switch for the DC and MC4 connectors but that is not important I think.

It is possible to change the setting in the solar inverter and use it for wind.
All the settings and the windtable will be there , and ready to program.

This is not a hoax , I managed to do this on a PVI3.6 and a PVI6000 in "wind switch"

Works like a charm , tested live with a blow up on customer site.
replaced with a PVI 6000 and worked like it always did , before it was in defect.

Kind regards

P.S. a normal solar PVI aurora will not work with a windturbine because of the mppt algoritme

That is pretty fantastic Cor! In particular since there are no manufacturers left of grid-tie wind inverters.

Can you post a step-by-step list of instructions on how to do this? I'm sure lots of people would like to be able to do 'make' a wind inverter.

For the average user it is not that easy to do,
my plan is to write a upload file that can be transferred to the solar inverter to do the work

call it a windupgrade package

witch contains
the usb dongel rs485
the rs485 cable
the software
and the unlock for the inverter
every inverter has a other unlock
and a manual how to

that would be a great deal. if you get a package together to sell let me know. it is hard to find the wind inverter.

Very interesting to learn how to do it at home, socially now when the world under lockdown and companies of solar systems are off. Thank you.

Nice Cor!
That should help people figure it out better.

Not sure if I posted a link here before, but I have both instructions and software on our site for people to download. Saves some of the searching...

Hello Rob , did you ever test this with the trio 10.0 and 12.5 ?

Cor, no, I've never tested it. In fact I've never tried converting a P1 inverter myself; we stopped distributing/selling Power-One/ABB as a brand a very long time ago (around 2014 I think, and we didn't part amicably). Because of the search ranking of some of the articles on our Web site I still get weekly requests and questions about P1 inverters, usually their wind inverters (or people looking for one), so the article helps many that contact us.

Regarding the trios, I've not heard of anyone else that tried this. In theory it could well work. Those inverters too existed in a wind and a solar version, and it's entirely possible P1 followed the same mechanism of having a dual firmware installed in them.
