Not too sure about having a boiler close to the house. More info on pressures would be helpful.

Hi Ralph,
I assume you meant me.:)
I have been loosely considering a wood fired steam engine for back-up. I will investigate your link in more detail.
I am heading the cottage now for a long weekend. One of my chores (inside chores since I hear there is over 2 feet of new snow on the ground!) is to install the Bogart Engineering Trimetric unit that I picked up from Ric Murphy this morning.
Thanks,
Mark

If there's snow on the ground, there's snow on the roof. If we get a rainey spell, what kind of slope does your cabin roof have? A camp i once worked at had a roof collapse and crush a number of canoes stored within...big bonfire that spring plus a batch of new canoes! Don't forget your shovel(s), the job being non-gender specific:)
The steam link might be a pretty pricey standby setup...probably more intended for 24/7 use for heat and power. Can a turbine/generator run at low pressure i wonder? I recall seeing a picture of a railway roundhouse, or what used to be one, flattened by a boiler explosion. Not something you'd want very close to your house/cabin/anything. For me, 70 hours of BBB running (big blue betty) per year wouldnt' warrant a steam setup, but if it was also a home heat system...with a constant 2kw power to loads and batteries..that might bear thinking about.
Enjoy your weekend.
