I second what you're saying: The "Real Goods" company is one of the oldest out there in renewable energy and sustainable building. Their "Sourcebook" is essentially their company catalog, but instead of just listing items and prices it has lots of articles regarding building, PV, hydro power, heating, sustainable transportation etc. It really is a goldmine of information. If you're going to buy one book to get a quick idea of the basics in many RE fields this is the book I would recommend (I have their 2005 edition, it was US$35 in those days).
