The Australian government, in common with a few others, has been spending madly to prevent or reduce a recession/depression. One of the areas the money is going to is to help insulate about 3 million homes throughout this sunburnt country.

Over the last couple of years, I've been progressively insulating my rented accommodation (which I'm hoping to purchase in the near future) with fibreglass batts in the ceiling and I'm now working on a faux double glazing of some windows to reduce heat transfer both ways. I'm using heavy duty clear vinyl from my local swimming pool supplier and gaffer taping it over the entire window (which I never open preferring to use the door to ventilate). I leave a small flap in the vinyl to allow the controls for my venetian blinds to operate. There seems to be approximately 1 degree (Centigrade) difference between glazed and unglazed. To do one window roughly 1.8 metres high by 2.7 metres long cost me about $25 and an hour of my time.

Ironically, my neighbour and landlord, after much discussion between us, over several years, decided to get his own house insulated in the ceiling only a couple of weeks ago. And he's probably not going to be able to take advantage of this largesse. However, he's pretty pleased with the result of the insulation, as he's reduced his use of the reverse cycle airconditioner. He's got to wait a while to see how much the reduction actually IS, but he's still pretty pleased with it.

These days, it's very important to save any money we can and if by so we can protect your planet, it's even better
