Hey Folks,

Need some suggestions or feedback. I want to install a drainback system. I live in PEI, Canada, 46 latitude on a south facing hill. Most of systems in my area are glycol systems and wondering why drainback system is not an option. From what I have read it does present a good option for freeze protection and I can use more panels to get more heat.

I have 5 flat plate collectors 3 norsun 3 x 8 feet collectors and two 5 x 8 feet (forget make, themodynamics?). I would like to put the bunch together. Any suggestions? I had an energy audit done last fall and would like to take adv of some money from the feds $500 to install system. Will a drainback system work??

Thanks,

Rob

Drainback systems are great as long as the storage area is well insulated and no water collects in the system. You must take the trouble to make sure everything is sloped properly. A wide drain is also I good idea. A restricted flow can cauls ice build up. Instead of using 3/4 copper you could use 1.5" PVC since there is no pressure in the drain.

I am using a MTD drainback system.. no copper, no PEX, no glycol, no thermopane. The 2x8 MTD collectors weigh 30 lb each and cost about $4/sq ft.
Drainback is the way to go.

Lot's of examples, good tips, and links.
His $1K solar collecter he built is a pex draindown, with monthly data charts.
