I think the problem is that the headlights of a vehicle approaching from behind "wash out" the down shining light. It's probably great as long as there no other vehicles on the road.

But you are right, Paul, I don't ride much at night.

(Especially this time of the year - - the Tour de France is on. 8.30 pm till midnight or later every night!!!) ;)
