Have developed a rotor that works at 60 rpm . Seeking a 60 rpm 10 kw permanent magnet alternator that will work with my rotor

Hi Deepak,

That is a very, very low RPM for the power involved...
How much money can this cost? I'm asking because it's possible to find a PMG that'll do what you ask, but it will be a vastly oversized one, and therefore expensive. If this is for a research project with deep pockets that may not be a problem, if it is for you personally then it's probably not going to fly.

Hi Rob
Thanks for your comments. I realize that the size and costs could be high. However, the applications that afford power generation without the associated gearbox for speed increaser are tremendous.

Deepak,

Why not just incorporate a planetary gearset with an alternator? They are very simple, effective and very low resistance, typically utilize a sun gear, planetary gears and a ring gear.

One can easily purchase stock units that are 3:1 or 4:1 ratio, or turn them around to get 1:3 / 1:4 ratio.

I tried a 3:1 planetary gearbox. My experience was not very good . Either the gb was oversized or otherwise it offered a lot of resistance.

Deepak,

yea - I would guess that startup would be an issue using a gear box that increases gearing rather than decreases it..

any way of letting it start up without gearing then switch over?

An Alxion 500STK2M permanent magnet alternator (http://www.alxion.com/e_produit/86.pdf) will just about do the job, by the looks of it 10kW is around 65 RPM. Excellent alternators, but it's going to cost you. It is a 20kW rated power alternator.

The Quiet Revolution Vetical (http://www.quietrevolution.co.uk/qr5.htm)axis is using a Low RPM servo/generator that is available off the shelf in lots of sizing/voltage/output/speed configurations in the SKA DDR series by Motor power group at this link . http://www.motorpowergroup.com/en/p_ska_ddr_en.php Paul
